Backyard Microscope

Bio: This blog is a companion to our Facebook Page and our YouTube Channel which are also called "Backyard Microscope". Our mission is to deliver fun, compelling and highly educational science lessons rooted in microscopy which will inspire young people to think and to be curious! We plan to deliver lessons that will encourage kids and adults alike to go "hunting" in their own backyards for treasures that can be viewed under regular microscopes. Our heart's desire is to help them to see the beauty, design and fascination in the microscopic universe that is right out their back door. Each lesson will have something fun, wacky, interesting and novel. We encourage requests from our subscribers for things they would like to see under the microscope - plus we will showcase high quality subscriber microscopy videos on our YT channel. Mark Armitage has been a microscopist for 35 years and has worked for Olympus America, Carl Zeiss & other microscope companies. He has taught light and electron microscopy at several universities. He has published over 30 scientific publications and journal covers. He serves on the boards of two scientific societies. Debra Liz Beltran has been a professional photographer for over 10 years. She has a degree in Early Childhood Education. She is the illustrator and imaging specialist for Backyard Microscope.

  1. This is so exciting! I’ve been following the saga of your dino-horn soft tissue and eagerly sharing interviews and things you’ve done online with my folks.
Kudos on the website, love the videos, like the cover art. Are you planning continued improvements like a contact page and real facebook page (right now you just have a personal profile set up)? I’d like to add a button to my sidebar sending people to your site and want to share a few ideas and this seems to be the only way to get in contact with you.
    God bless,

    1. Hi Cheri,
Many thanks for contacting us. Sorry it took so long to answer, it’s been a busy couple of days. We’re thrilled that you are following us and passing the word to others. The best way to contact us is through backyardmicroscope@gmail.com or micromark@juno.com. We do have a facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BackyardMicroscope. You can also friend Mark at http://www.facebook.com/mark.armitage.98. We are planning as many improvements as we can figure out how to do them. If you have any ideas we are open to suggestions.
      Mark & the Backyard Team
